Program:
Moe Momayez earned a Bachelor's and a PhD degree in mining engineering with emphasis in rock mechanics and applied geophysics from McGill University, Canada, where he was the manager of subsurface sensing laboratory for seven years and lead research and development projects in underground mining and ground control worth over two million dollars. In 2007, he joined the department of mining and geological engineering at the University of Arizona where he is currently an associate professor and associate department head. He is also the geosensing and energy team leader at the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at the University of Arizona. He holds five patents and two patent applications related to instrumentation, geomaterials characterization, rock breakage and renewable energy generation from mines. His expertise in non-invasive methods led to the development of techniques to estimate stresses in rocks, and to measure the quality of concrete and shotcrete used as support system in underground excavations. His teaching experience includes courses in rock and soil mass characterization, mine surveying, rock excavation, mine ventilation, and earth systems modeling and imaging.
