Robert Allen Metz -- (December 22, 1932 - June 12, 2020)
  • It's with heavy hearts that we announce that Robert A. Metz passed away on June 12, 2020.
  • Bob was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 22, 1932. He received his degree in Geological Engineering (Mining) from the Colorado School of Mine in 1955. 
  • Bob started his career in 1955 working for Kennecott Copper Corporation. Bob worked for Kennecott for 13 years (Chino Mines Division for 4 years and Ray Mines Division for 9 years). Bob went on to work for others companies like Duval Corporation, Phelps Dodge Mining Company,  and Battle Mountain Exploration Company. In 1992 Bob established R. A. Metz Associates and worked as a consultant for corporations in the Unites States, Latin America, and Australia.
  • Bob's memorial services will be announced at a later date.


    May 5th, 2020 -- J David Lowell (1928 - 2020)

    • It's with heavy hearts that we announce that J. David Lowell, 92, has passed away.
    • Dave was born on a ranch in Southern Arizona in 1928. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Mining Engineering in 1949, from Stanford University with an M.S. Geology in 1957, and was awarded the University of Arizona's Professional Engineer of Geology in 1959. Dave obtained honorary degrees from Universidad Nacional de San Marcos in Peru in 1998 and the University of Arizona in 2000.
    • Dave was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1999. He received the SME Daniel C. Jackling and Robert Dreyer Awards, the AIME Earl McConnell Award, the SEG Silver Medal and Penrose Gold Medal, and the MMSA Gold Medal. Lowell was inducted into the American Mining Hall of Fame on December 7, 2002 at the 20th Annual Banquet of the Mining Foundation of the Southwest.
    • Dave worked for more than 110 companies and governments from 1961 to 1990. See more here...

      Arizona Geological Survey’s Releases: Arizona Mining Review e-video Magazine #50 (Blog)

      • Greg Hahn (VP at Arizona Silver Exploration) joined AZGS' Carson Richardson on the 50th broadcast of the Arizona Mining Review.

      • Greg and Carson chatted for 10-minutes about Arizona Silver's 3 Arizona mineral prospects and focused on the gold-silver Philadelphia-Arabian property in the Oatman Mining District of Mohave County. 

      • The Philadelphia-Arabian mine produced gold from about 1900 to the onset of World War II. It was shuttered during the war and never reopened. Greg and his partners reviewed mining data from the AZGS Mine Data website. They are confident that economic gold and silver deposits persist at the site.

        AZGS Annual Impact on Arizona's Economy

        • A new economic impact report shows that the products and services of the Arizona Geological Survey (UA AZGS) contributed nearly $32 million to Arizona’s economy over the past year – a 34-fold return on the survey’s FY-2018 state allocation of $941,000.

          In Spring 2019, AZGS contracted with the Univ. of Arizona’s Eller School of Management graduate program to assess the annual contribution of our geologic products and services to Arizona’s economy. The results are in!

          August 16, 2016 -- Dr. M. Lee Allison (1948 - 2016)

          • It's with heavy hearts that we announce that Dr. M. Lee Allison, State Geologist and Director of the Arizona Geological Survey, passed away Tuesday, August 16th, after suffering a critical head injury from a fall at his home on Saturday, August 13th. 

            Lee’s passing is a tragic loss for his wife, family, staff of the Arizona Geological Survey, the geologic and geoinformatics communities, and Lee’s broad circle of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances around the world. 

            There will not be a memorial service. Lee’s family has requested they not be contacted. Any messages of condolence can be addressed to AZGS (Arizona Geological Survey) team members who will pass them along to his family.

            Lee’s wife, Ann, suggested donations be made to the Association for Women Geoscientists/Salt Lake Chapter or to a scholarship fund that will be established at UMass to honor Lee.

          May 27, 2016 -- Michael R. Carter (October 27, 1944 - May 27, 2016)

          •  A native Idahoan, Mike Carter was born on October 27, 1944 in Boise, ID.  He went on to graduate from the University of Idaho in 1967. As a geologist, he traveled the world for the next 48 years, overseeing various mining operations from explorations to productions. From Armenia to South America, Arizona  to South Dakota and numerous other states, his skills and personality took him all over the map. Mining, fishing, and golf were his passions, his sharp wit will be missed.           Dec. 2, 2013 --  Keith Everett Staley


          Keith Everett Staley, age 100, passed away early morning Tuesday, November 19, 2013 with his daughter by his side. He was born on January 13, 1913 in Colorado, grew up in Clayton New Mexico but returned to Colorado to graduate from the Colorado School of Mines.

          Preceded in death by his wife Frances E. Staley and son George Staley. Survived by daughters Cecilia ( Cindy) Pfeiffer, Alex Martin; sons Richard and Douglas Staley and multiple grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

          He was a "man of service". Service to his country serving in WWII Army Corp of Engineers. Service to the state of Arizona as a pioneer in the copper mining industry. His copper mining career spanned 40 years starting in 1937 with the opening of Phelps Dodge, Morenci, AZ to thirty years with Magma/Newmont Mining Co. He retired as General Manager of San Manuel copper mine - one of the largest copper mines in the world.

          Services to his community started with 15 years of teaching lapidary at the Old Pueblo Lapidary Club in Tucson to founding the Sun City Oro Valley Vistoso Silver & Lapidary Club in 1986. He continued to work silver, cut rocks, and design jewelry to the end.

          He was a mentor, teacher, and friend to many and a "remarkable man".
