Available
Venue and beverage sponsor:
Speaker: Stephanie Brown, Archaeologist, WestLand Resources
Overview:
Mining has been an essential part of Arizona’s history for centuries, and today the diverse remnants of mining operations large and small are abundant around the old Copper Mountain or Clifton-Morenci mining districts. In many places, the long sequence of technological changes in mining is reflected in discrete sets of features preserved in layers or side by side on the landscape. This presentation provides a sample of recent historical and archaeological approaches to the layered mining landscape in Clifton-Morenci, covering research themes, archival sources, oral history, archaeological data recovery, mining camp life, and the value of engaging modern mining communities in the study of local mining history.
