About SME
National SME Organization
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) is an international society of professionals in the minerals industry. The SME membership is nearly 15,000 strong, with members in nearly 100 countries. A member society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), SME's roots date back to 1871 when a handful of mining engineers founded AIME. Since its inception, SME has continued to evolve over the years to stay abreast of industry changes and to reflect the ever-broadening interests of its members.
SME is organized into eight divisions—Coal & Energy, Environmental, Health & Safety, Industrial Minerals & Aggregates, Mineral and Metallurgical Processing, Mining and Exploration, the Underground Construction Association (UCA), and the Women’s Auxiliary to the AIME (WAAIME). These divisions reflect the diversity of the membership and provide the structural framework for SME’s committee activities. Since its founding, SME has emphasized professional development and knowledge exchange through publications, professional registration, peer‑reviewed technical papers, accreditation programs, meetings and exhibits, public education initiatives, and short courses.
